“We have such sights to show you!”
—Pinhead, Hellraiser (1987)
On Saturday, October 31, Mitte Daily presents the Monochrome Masquerade, a one-night only Halloween ball in black-and-white, with a live show by SADO OPERA.
SOUND
Blending classic house, garage, and disco, SADO OPERA is a blood-curdling, high-camp fixture of the Berlin underground. A long-standing resident of Wilde Renate, the band has received acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone, The Independent, and BBC. The Guardian described it as “all saucy, big-hearted joy.” On Halloween night, the masqueraded troupe will perform a special hour-long live show featuring vocals, keyboard, and double bass (yes, the giant string thing), followed by a night-long DJ set.
VENUE
Hidden behind a steel door right beneath Berlin-Mitte’s S-Bahn tracks, Bar Tausend is an iconic location that’s been keeping good company for roughly two decades. Decked out in wood and mirrors, it played the role of the queer nightclub Der Holländer in Babylon Berlin. Off-screen, it welcomed guests we don’t dare to name. The cocktails are to die for.
HOST
Founded in 2021, Mitte Daily is an independent media platform dedicated to contemporary Berlin culture. Its following includes global tastemakers, such as Jim Jarmusch, as well as local gatekeepers, such as Sven Marquardt. As an anonymous Redditor once noted, “Knowing Mitte Daily and its delusional followers, who are sipping matcha latte all day around Weinmeistraße, I can easily tell those people (and I know some of them personally) are just interested in performance—to see and to be seen.” On Halloween night, we intend to live up to that allegation.
ATTIRE
Inspired by Freddie Mercury’s infamous 1985 black-and-white ball hosted at Old Mrs Henderson’s in Munch, we invite you to dress in monochrome. Whether that means showing up as the Bride of Frankenstein, cosplaying Marlene Ditrich, or just throwing on a black tux is up to you. Kindly note: we will be taking pictures.
DOOR
The doors will open at 9 p.m., with the live show starting at 11 p.m. Tickets are available for €20 via Eventbrite, as well as and upon entry—in case we don’t run out, that is.
