Gondwana Records ist wieder zu Gast im Berliner Gretchen. Für diesen Abend haben wir ein Programm mit atmosphärischer Musik zusammengestellt, das von soulful Jazz bis zu Ambient und Post-Klassik reicht. Mit dabei sind Phi-Psonics, das immersive Ensemble aus Los Angeles, Jack Wyllie, der vor allem als Mitbegründer des für den Mercury Prize nominierten Portico Quartet bekannt sein dürfte, sowie Gondwanas eigene DJ und Tastemaker Mari*, die erhebende Sounds von Gondwana Records und darüber hinaus auflegen wird.

Phi-Psonics ist ein meditatives Ensemble aus Los Angeles unter der Leitung des Bassisten Seth Ford-Young. An diesem Abend spielen Seth Ford-Young (Kontrabass / Leitung), Sylvain Carton (Saxofon / Flöten), Chip Wickham (Saxofon / Flöten), Bruno Heinen (Keyboards) und Jon Scott (Schlagzeug). Ihre zutiefst beseelte Musik verbindet Einflüsse aus Jazz und Klassik mit Ford-Youngs eigenen musikalischen Erfahrungen, Beziehungen und seiner Auseinandersetzung mit Spiritualität.

Jack Wyllie ist Saxofonist, Flötist und Komponist. Mit seinem charakteristischen Spiel auf der Flöte sowie dem Sopran- und Tenorsaxofon zählt er zu den wichtigen Stimmen der zeitgenössischen Musik. Als begehrter Kollaborateur arbeitet er in Projekten, die von Ambient, Fourth World, Electronica und moderner Klassik beeinflusst sind. Im Gretchen tritt er gemeinsam mit Dobrwaba Czocher (Cello), Hinako Omori (Keyboards) und Jesse Barrett (Schlagzeug) auf. Auf seinem Debütalbum „Eternal Spring“, verbindet Jack Wyllie aufstrebende Melodien und zyklische Rhythmen und sucht dabei ganz bewusst nach etwas Hoffnungsvollem und Schönem.

Gondwana Records ist ein unabhängiges Plattenlabel, das 2008 in Manchester von dem Musiker und Produzenten Matthew Halsall und seinem Bruder, dem Grafikdesigner und Künstler Daniel Halsall, gegründet wurde. Bekannt für seinen charakteristischen Sound und seine visuelle Ästhetik hat Gondwana eine Spielart von progressiver, jazzbeeinflusster Electronica, Ambient, Post-Klassik und zeitgenössischem Spiritual Jazz mitgeprägt und damit die Karrieren einiger der eigenwilligsten Künstler*innen der Gegenwart gefördert. Matthew Halsall, Jasmine Myra, Portico Quartet, Hania Rani, Vega Trails und Svaneborg Kardyb sind nur einige der Künstler*innen, die beim Label ihre musikalische Heimat gefunden haben.

Gondwana Records Presents re-visits Berlin’s iconic Gretchen. We have curated an evening of radiant music ranging from soulful jazz to sounds of ambient and post-classical. Phi-Psonics, the immersive group from Los Angeles, Jack Wyllie, who is perhaps best known as the co-founder of Mercury Prize nominated Portico Quartet and Gondwana’s own DJ and Tastemaker Mari* who will be DJing upliftingsounds from Gondwana Records and beyond.

Phi-Psonics is a meditative group from Los Angeles, led by bassist Seth Ford-Young. On the night their lineup will feature Seth Ford-Young (double bass / leader), Sylvain Carton (saxophone / flutes), Chip Wickham (saxophone / flutes), Bruno Heinen (keyboards) and Jon Scott (drums). Their deeply soulful music draws on jazz and classical influences together with Ford-Young’s own musical experiences, relationships, and his introduction to spirituality.

Jack Wyllie is a saxophonist, flautist and composer whose distinctive voice on flute, soprano and tenor saxophones mark him out as a key figure in contemporary music. A keen collaborator whose projects have drawn on ambient, Fourth-world, electronica and modern classical influences. He will be performing alongside Dobrwaba Czocher (cello), Hinako Omori (keyboards) and Jesse Barrett (drums).

On Jack’s debut album under his own name, Eternal Spring, his compositions balance elevating melodies and cyclical rhythms while unashamedly reaching for something hopeful and beautiful.
